META TAGS / ROBOTS

A few words on META Tags. Their isn't anything magic about meta tags and the keyword meta tag is over rated as a source for obtaining a top ranking. That being said, you should know how to use them and yes you should use them. The title and description meta tags are important for a good ranking in most search engines. The keywords are also important but DO NOT carry the weight that they used to. The content of the page is more important today than in the past. Think "keyword phrase" and use it at the beginning of the title, description, keywords, page title, comment, alt. tag, and first paragraph.

Meta tags go inside the header tags.
<head>
<title>Your title here</title>
<meta name="description" content="A short description here">
<meta name="keywords" content="your keywords here">
</head>

Description: 150 to 250 characters. We suggest 150 characters or less. If it is to long the search engine will cut it off.
Keywords: 800 to 1024 characters depending on the search engine. We suggest 800 max. 254 or less best.
Number of keyword repeats: Some say 3, some 5 and 7 is max. depending on the search engine, 3 times should be safe.

Robot Meta Tag Options

This meta tag (robots tag) will keep spiders from crawling the page. If you have a page that you DO NOT want indexed by a search engine you can add the following tag.

<HEAD>
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX">
</HEAD>

INDEX - tells the robot it is ok to index the page.

FOLLOW - tells the robot it is ok to follow the links found on this page

<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="INDEX,FOLLOW">
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX,FOLLOW">
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="INDEX,NOFOLLOW">
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW">
